Max will be taking the helm as one of our resident Music Foundations instructors at Dubspot Online and NYC. Students will develop a deeper understanding of the roots and lineage of a variety of electronic and dance music, strengthen their keyboard skills, and learn valuable music theory skills, deepening their creative practice and facilitating effective collaborations with musical partners. Classes start soon, See Dates and Enroll Today!

“Music Foundations is a class that teaches you about the inner workings and theory of music from the ground up and enables students to apply their knowledge right away to compose their own songs, with melodies, basslines, chord progressions, and beats all working together. I have had students that knew nothing about the theory of music and and were writing complete tracks by the end of the course. The class is also great for production veterans, who may be able to fly in and out of a DAW, but may never have consciously known which notes to use for a melody or why certain notes sound better with a particular chord progression or bassline than others. The concepts we learn in Music Foundation go far beyond the classroom and will accompany you throughout your music-making career.  Besides this, our classes share a great camaraderie, with weekly live video sessions in which students interact with the instructor. Students are given the opportunity to make life-long connections with like-minded musicians from all over the world, one of the most valuable aspects of Dubspot Online.” ~ Max Wild

About Max Wild

Electronic Music Production Instructor Saxophone innovator and producer Max Wild has been a forerunner on the Afro-jazz scene in New York since commanding international attention with his ObliqSound release Tamba, which features Zimbabwean vocalists Chiwoniso and the late Sam Mtukudzi, as well as Wild’s all-star band from New York. Raised in Zimbabwe by German parents, and later moving to Berlin, London, and then New York, Wild was exposed to a broad spectrum of music from an early age. With credentials that range from performing with Grammy-nominated jazz tenorist Mark Turner to recording with Afropop icon Oliver Mtukudzi, Wild started producing music as well as incorporating electronic elements into his live performances using Ableton Live. He has performed at major jazz and world music venues and festivals around the world such as Nuits d’Afrique Montreal, Celebrate Brooklyn New York, Harare International Festival of the Arts Zimbabwe, Maalmakula Festival Estonia, Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club London UK, House on Fire Swaziland, and Music Meeting Holland. Wild is an accomplished educator and teaches music theory and ear-training at Manhattan School of Music Precollege as well as giving music workshops around the world. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from London’s Guildhall School of Music and a Master of Music from Manhattan School of Music. In April 2012 he was recruited by Dubspot to teach Music Foundations. Music Foundations Program

About This Program

The best producers, DJs, and musicians in the world strive to be well-rounded. So should you. In Dubspot’s Music Foundations Program, you’ll explore three major aspects of music: rhythmic theory, melodic theory, and critical listening. Most pioneering early electronic musicians had years of conservatory training in theory and performance but had access to very limited technologies. In today’s musical world, it’s the opposite: we have a powerful and versatile array of electronic music making tools at our fingertips, but often fall short in our theoretical understanding of how electronic music works. Our Music Foundations program is designed to fill this gap and provide training in fundamental skills and concepts with the electronic musician, DJ, and producer in mind. In this course, you’ll build your chops and learn the basics of musical language and theory so that you can make and play the music you want. You will also develop a deeper understanding of the roots and lineage of a variety of electronic and dance music genres, and explore compositional techniques and song structure. The weekly homework lessons for all three courses have been designed using Ableton Live, and along the way you’ll also learn the basics of Ableton and how to use it as a powerful tool to improve your musicianship in a variety of ways.
